Biomass Reburn Study, Carolina Power and Light Inc., General Electric Corp.

The goal of this effort was to prove that biomass gasification/reburn technologies (BioReburn) will generate power while significantly reducing NOx emissions of coal-fired units. The project team believes that demonstrating this technology would provide a springboard for biomass gasification into other biomass energy applications. Substituting biomass fuels for coal can reduce the emissions from the coal-fired generation fleet, increase biomass power generation, and provide reliable renewable power. CP&L is a leader in the introduction of innovative low-emissions technologies for power generation including SCR, ROFA/ROTAMIX, WIR and wet scrubbers. The results indicated that the process would work, but the system would be too costly to pursue.
