Cofiring Market Assessment, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

ANTARES performed an analysis of coal-fired boilers and biomass resources within the U.S. This effort focused on the age and geographic distribution of coal plants, and identification of regions where significant raw biomass materials (e.g., wood product industry (WPI) residues) exist to support power generation. ANTARES collected state WPI materials and determined locations available where sawmill residues could support at least 5 MW of capacity. These locations formed the basis for cofiring markets for which further logistic, economic, and environmental considerations were investigated.
